For someone considering a career in pediatric therapy, becoming an RBT offers a way to begin working directly with children without first earning a college degree. For parents, understanding the role helps clarify who is working with their child and who oversees treatment.

What does an RBT do?
An RBT helps put a behavior-analytic plan into practice. Depending on the client’s goals and the supervisor’s instructions, responsibilities can include:
- Helping a client practice skills.
- Recording observable behavior and responses during sessions.
- Assisting with parts of behavioral assessments.
- Following established teaching and behavior-support procedures.
- Documenting sessions and communicating relevant observations.

Consider an illustrative example: a child is practicing how to ask for help during an activity. The RBT follows the supervisor’s teaching instructions, notices when assistance is needed, and records the child’s responses. Questions about changing the approach go back to the supervisor.

Respect and communication are part of the job
Working with children requires attention to their dignity, privacy, and needs. RBTs must work within their competence, protect confidential information, and seek appropriate supervision. Being willing to ask for help is a professional responsibility. RBT Ethics Code
A useful question for a prospective employer is: “How will you teach me to recognize when I need clinical support, and who will be available when that happens?”
What is the difference between an RBT and a BCBA?
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst, or BCBA, is a graduate-level certified practitioner who can provide behavior-analytic services independently. An RBT works under direction and supervision. How to become an RBT
The process includes eligibility checks, training, a competency assessment, an application, and an examination.
1. Check the basic eligibility requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 and have a high school education or equivalent. Criminal background and abuse-registry checks are required, subject to the BACB’s rules on availability and documentation. A qualified certificant completes the application attestation. RBT Handbook
Before paying for training, ask how you will arrange the assessment and documentation that follow it. Knowing the whole process helps you avoid completing a course without a clear next step.
2. Complete qualifying 40-hour training
Choose training that meets the 2026 RBT training requirements. The course must span at least five days and finish within 180 days.
Training may be delivered online, in person, or through a combination of formats. Confirm that the provider supplies the required completion documentation and uses the current curriculum. BACB: 2026 training requirements

3. Complete the initial competency assessment
After training, you must demonstrate practical competence. The assessment must be completed within the required 90-day window before applying.
A qualified BCBA or BCaBA oversees the assessment. Current rules require the applicant and assessors to share an employment or contractual relationship with the organization providing services to the participating client. Ask an assessment provider:
- Who is responsible for my assessment?
- How will the required organizational relationships be established?
- How will the client-based portions be arranged?
- What is included in the fee?
- What happens if I need additional practice?
A clear answer to these questions matters as much as the advertised price.
4. Apply to the BACB
Submit the required documentation and payment through your BACB account. Application approval is required before scheduling the certification examination. RBT Handbook
Check your name, dates, signatures, and uploaded documents carefully. Keep your own copies and follow the current application instructions.
5. Pass the RBT examination
For 2026, prepare using the RBT Test Content Outline, third edition. Its six domains cover data collection and graphing, assessment, behavior acquisition, behavior reduction, documentation and reporting, and ethics. It contains 75 scored questions and 10 unscored questions. BACB: examination outline
The examination lasts 90 minutes and is offered in English. Check the handbook for identification, scheduling, and accommodation instructions. RBT Handbook
When comparing study materials, check their edition and date. A practice resource labeled “RBT” may still refer to an earlier examination.
6. Confirm your supervision before providing services
Before beginning RBT services, a qualified supervisor or requirements coordinator must add you as a supervisee in the BACB system.
Ask your employer to explain how supervision will work in practice: who observes sessions, how feedback is delivered, and how to reach someone when a question arises.
How long does it take to become an RBT?
There is no single completion timeline. The 40-hour course is one part of the process; you also need time for checks, assessment arrangements, application review, and an examination appointment.
Build your schedule around those dependencies. Before choosing a course, ask when you could realistically complete the assessment and whether any required documents will expire before you apply.
Be cautious about treating a training provider’s course length as a promise of full certification.
How much does RBT certification cost?
The 2026 handbook lists a $65 application-processing fee and a $45 examination appointment fee, totaling $110 for those two items. RBT Handbook
Your budget may also need to cover training, assessment services, screening, preparation materials, and any repeat examination appointment.
Ask for an itemized total. If an employer offers financial support, clarify what it pays directly, what it reimburses, and whether any repayment conditions apply.

How to choose your first RBT job
Certification tells you that you have met entry requirements. Your first workplace should help you put that preparation into practice.
Use the interview to understand both the clinical support and the working arrangement.

For Miami applicants, ask about travel between assignments and the language expectations of each role. If bilingual skills are requested, clarify how the employer evaluates and supports communication in each language.
How much does an RBT earn?
Compare current written offers for the location and setting where you plan to work. An advertised hourly rate alone does not tell you what your weekly earnings will be.
For example, $25 per hour for 20 paid hours is $500 per week before taxes, while the same rate for 30 paid hours is $750. These are illustrations, not AKP pay rates or market salary estimates.
Ask about dependable paid hours, benefits, cancellations, and expenses before comparing offers.
How do you maintain RBT certification?
RBT certification involves continuing responsibilities.
Under the 2026 transition, newly certified RBTs enter a two-year certification cycle and must earn 12 professional development units during that cycle. Existing RBTs move to the new cycle after their 2026 recertification, with transition rules applying to their circumstances. BACB: professional development
Ongoing supervision remains required. The minimum includes supervision for 5% of monthly behavior-analytic service hours and at least two real-time, face-to-face contacts, including an individual meeting. Keep track of your certification status, supervision, and renewal date alongside your supervisor.
Can an RBT build a longer-term career in ABA?
Yes. Some people build their careers around direct support. Others pursue additional education and qualifications.
BCaBA certification is an undergraduate-level credential that requires supervision by a BCBA. BCBA certification is a graduate-level credential. Each has its own eligibility requirements. BACB: BCaBA, BACB: BCBA
Working as an RBT does not automatically mean your paid hours count toward an advanced credential. Qualifying supervised fieldwork has separate requirements, and some RBT activities may not count. Discuss your plans with a qualified fieldwork supervisor before assuming that work hours will be eligible. BACB: RBTs pursuing further certification

What should parents know about their child’s RBT?
An RBT may be someone your child works with regularly. It is reasonable to ask:
- Who supervises this person?
- Who sets and reviews my child’s goals?
- How are observations shared with the supervising clinician?
- Who should I speak with if I have concerns?
Understanding those relationships helps you communicate with the right person.
